Jadyn and I had dinner at Christopher's on the evening of November 2nd. I had a pint of Clipper City's Oktoberfest with my dinner.

Balto MärzHon pours a crystal-clear copper. It's topped by an off-white head that fades to a film, leaving speckles of lace. The aroma is fairly mild overall. Initially toasty notes are predominant, but swirling brings out aromas of caramel and toffee.

Toasty, and bready malts move into a moderately sweet, caramel character in the center, which then fades into a mild, but firm hop bitterness. This beer is moderately carbonated, and light-bodied.

I thought that this was a decent Märzen. It wasn't as malty as mast other examples of the style, which could be good or bad, depending on your preference.

954-955. New York: King's Feast

After leaving Black Rabbit in Greenpoint, we set off in search of food. Being an historically Polish area of Brooklyn it's perhaps not surprising that we ended up eating at a Polish restaurant called Krolewskie Jadlo (King's Feast). Win had the Traditional Stew, David had the Beef Stroganow, which was served in a breadbowl, and I - because I'm a sucker for potato pancakes and perogies - had the sampler.

Pours a crystal clear copper color. The head thins to noting almost immediately. The aroma is light with a hint of caramel sweetness. This beer is predominantly malty. Bready and caramel notes upfront. There's a bit of alcoholic spice in the finish, but not a lot of bitterness. Medium-bodied and highly carbonated. Overall a decent beer.

899-907. Salem Harvest Fest

David came up to Boston the weekend of October 18th. As usual, we had a weekend of drinking scheduled. David arrived at around 10 PM on Friday night, had a bite to eat at our place, and then we went to the oddly named pub, "Joe Sent Me", for a few beers.

David had found a small Beer/Mead/Wine fest in Salem on Saturday, called the Salem Harvest Fest. We had a particularly nauseating ferry ride to Salem, but managed to walk most of it off before having lunch at Upper Crust.

The Fest itself was small. Initially it was very crowded and a bit hard to move around, but people ended up leaving relatively early and it got much better. There was pizza from Upper Crust, and some cheese and crackers for snacking. There were beer booths from Magic Hat, Harpoon, Mercury Brewing, and Fisherman's. I managed to try all of the beers that I hadn't had yet (only 9). I was particularly impressed with what Fisherman's was offering, and I'll have to try them again.

There were also several booths serving wine and a booth serving mead. There were three very nice Danish meads , one made with ginger, one made with hibiscus, and one made with caraway. We also had a bit of wine towards the end of the fest.

We also witnessed an heroic effort to get sloshed by an overweight, middle-aged, white guy. We would stand next to a booth, get a sample and quickly sip it, all the while manufacturing his best attempt at a contemplative face. After he finished the sample he would simply hold his glass out waiting for a refill. He would repeat this until he was denied service at the booth, and would move on to the next.

Rather than taking the ferry back to Boston in our inebriated states, we opted to take the much smoother commuter rail back into Boston. Link

I bought a 6-pack of this at Downtown Wine & Spirits in early October. Jadyn wanted something "autumny" so I thought an Oktoberfest would be a good choice. I chose this one because I always seem to pass over this brewery. I served it in my Cambridge Brewing Company pint glass.

I've finally gotten over a cold, and can smell again, so it's back to reviewing beers. I purchased this a month or so ago at Downtown Wine & Spirits. It's been sitting in my fridge since then. I let it warm to around 45º F and served it in my NERAX pint glass.

588-591. Cricket's Visit #1

Needing to get out of the black hole of entertainment that is my grandparents' house, I headed to Cricket's for some beer on Monday the 18th. When I arrived I called Win and Jordan. Jordan arrived first and we played darts for an hour or so. Win arrived later, after we had moved to a table on the balcony.

I started off with the always tasty Live Oak Hefe before moving on to new beers.
