1068-1070. Beer at the Tahoe Cabin

We spent most of our time in California at Jadyn's Family's cabin at Tahoe. While there we had the bottled beer that I'd purchased at Russian River, as well as a growler that we'd purchased at The Brewery at Lake Tahoe.

1068. Damnation

Jadyn and I shared this bottle with her sister on August 3rd.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Russian River Brewing Company
Alcohol: 7.75%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL, Batch 048
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.5 | Smell: 5.0 | Taste: 5.0| Mouthfeel: 4.5 | Drinkability: 5.0

Overall:
4.85

Damnation pours a mildly cloudy, golden color. It's topped by a thick, white head that retains well, but eventually fades to a thin layer. The aroma is spot on for the style. There are notes of banana, peppery spice, and yeast above a grassy, grainy undercurrent. Swirling brings out more graininess, pepper, and some alcoholic spice.

There's an initial sweetness that's mild, but builds into a fruity esters in the center: bananas, hints of juicy, tropical fruit, and citrus. The finish has a bite from the peppery spiciness and the alcohol. There are lingering hints of yeast, and a mild, hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Damnation is medium-bodied, but the crisp carbonation, along with a dry finish make this beer seem a bit lighter-bodied.

This beer was excellent. It's probably one of the best examples of the style that I've had.

1069. The Brewery at Lake Tahoe's Witbier

We picked up a growler of The Brewery's Witbier on a trip into South Lake Tahoe on August 6th.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: The Brewery at Lake Tahoe
Alcohol: ?
Serving: Growler
Style: Witbier, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 2.5 | Smell: 3.5 | Taste: 3.0 | Mouthfeel: 3.5| Drinkability: 3.5

Overall: 3.1

This witbier pours a cloudy, peachy, golden-orange color. Topped by a thin, white head that fades to nothing. The aroma has notes of powdery yeast, and nice, fruity notes of peach and banana. There are also the classic aromas of orange-peel and peppery coriander.

There's a mild, grainy sweetness upfront, moving into a fruity sweetness in the center: banana, and orangey-citrus. The finish has a peppery, corriander spice. The right flavors are there, but they're very mild overall. This witbier is light-bodied with good carbonation, and a mild dryness.

This beer isn't bad, but it's fairly middle of the road. Again, everything is a bit too subdied.

1070. Pliny the Elder

I opened up this beer on August 7th.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Russian River Brewing Company
Alcohol: 8.00%
Serving: Bottle, 500 mL
Style: American Double IPA, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 5.0 | Taste: 4.5 | Mouthfeel: 3.5 | Drinkability: 4.0

Overall: 4.35

Pliny the Elder is mildly hazy and copper in color. It's topped by a creamy, off-white head that retains well and leaves fluffy lace clinging to the glass. The aroma can be summed up in two words "intensly hoppy". The hops are herbal, piney and strongly resiny. Swirling the beer brings out even more resiny hops. There are fruity notes of apricots and oranges, malty sweetness, and toastiness that comes out on swirling. It's like sticking your nose into a bag of hops.

Overall this beer is pretty balanced. It's not overly sweet like a lot of other DIPAs. The intial malt impressions are toasty and bready with only a mild sweetness. Malts move towards a sweeter, caramel flavor in the center, but still not overly sweet. Hop flavors also make themselves known towards the center. There's a citric bite with a floral, orange blossom quality. Towards the finish there's a mild peppery bite with a good slighty herbal, strongly resiny hop bitterness in the finish that lingers long into the aftertaste. Pliny the Elder is medium-bodied, and has a prickly carbonation that cuts the sweetness somewhat. There's an oiliness towards the swallow that trails off leaving a final impression of thinness.

This DIPA is very balanced. The malts are present, but aren't cloyingly sweet like other examples of the style. The hops are present, but their main contribution is a nice finishing flavor and wonderful lingering bitterness.

1007-1009. Bottles from Whip In

Before leaving Austin we stopped at Whip In, a convenience store, market, beer store and Indian Cafe all in one (I regret not trying the Breakfast Naan). The beer selection was amazing, and based on browsing the website, even more impressive than I'd thought. We picked up several beers for drinking in Waco, since none of Waco's liquor stores have anything approaching a good selection of beers that haven't been sitting on the shelves forever (Dicorte's I'm looking at you). We drank these beers, along with a six-pack of Real Ale Full Moon Rye, over the span of Saturday and Sunday.

1007. Zoetzuur Flemish Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: De Proefbrouwerij
Alcohol: 7.00%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Flanders Red Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a cloudy, dark amber. Topped by a beige head that fades to a ring. Sweet and malty notes mingle with a bit of acidity in the aroma. Lightly sweet and malty flavors upfront move into a mild, fruity tartness in the center. Light-bodied and moderately carbonated with a mild dryness in the finish. This beer was tasty and had a lot of the right flavors, but was lacking the bracing acidity that I prefer to see in the style.

1008. Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: De Proefbrouwerij
Alcohol: 9.00%
Serving: Bottle, 11.2 oz.
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a cloudy, straw-golden, and is topped by a bright, white head. Fruity notes of banana and citrus hover over an earthy, Brettanomyces aroma. A mild fruitiness upfront builds to a peak in the center, followed by a light peppery finish with a mild earthiness. Medium-bodied and dry. I liked the Brettanomyces character present in the beer, but would have preferred more of it. Perhaps cellaring would help this beer out substantially.

1009. La Merle

Beer Stats:
Brewery: North Coast Brewing Co.
Alcohol: 7.90%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 4.0 | Taste: 3.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.0

Overall: 3.6

I enjoyed this beer sitting outside on David's dad's back porch. Pours a very cloudy golden with amber tints, and is topped by a thick, meringue-like, off-white head that retains well and leaves patches of lace. The aroma carries fruity notes of citrus, bananas and apricots, as well as hints of yeast and a peppery spice.

Sweet and bready malts move into a banana fruitiness in the center. The finish is mildly grainy and has a peppery spice that strengthens as the beer warms. Medium-bodied and smooth with moderate carbonation.

I'm not sure what I look for in a Saison, but not many have it. This beer is pleasant enough to drink, but just doesn't have that extra something that makes me say "Now this is a Saison!"

942-944. New York: Against the Grain

After leaving Jimmy's No. 43 we headed to Against the Grain, another beer bar in New York that I hadn't been to. The bar is small, it's narrow and not very deep. There are two rows of seating on either side of the bar with a narrow table in the center. There's a pressed tin ceiling and dark brick walls. The bartender was friendly, knowledgeable, and described the beers to us as he was pouring. These reviews are also based on split beers.

Wexford's, Bell's and the Cuvee.

942. Two Hearted Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Bell's Brewery
Alcohol: 7.00%
Serving: Bottle
Style: American IPA, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.5 | Smell: 5.0 | Taste: 4.5 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.5

Overall: 4.55

Pours a cloudy copper. Topped by a fluffy, meringue-like, white head with good retention. The aroma is hop-focused: delicious orange-blossom citrus and resiny hops. There's also a bit of a raw sugar undercurrent.

There's a toasty malt backbone with a light, raw sweetness. There's a nice citric hop flavor with a light herbal, resiny kick. Well balanced, there's a focus on the hop flavors rather than the hop bitterness. Light-bodied with a nice kick from the carbonation.

Well balanced. All of the hop flavor is there with just enough of the bitterness.

943. Cuvée Du 8ème

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brasserie Des Franches-Montagnes
Alcohol: 7.50%
Serving: Bottle
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 3.5 | Smell: 4.0 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.0

Overall: 3.9

Pours a very nice, hazed, reddish amber. The head thins to a wispy film. The aroma is sharp with acidic cherry notes. Wonderfully tart smelling.

Much milder on the palate than suggested by the aroma. On the sweet side of sour, but only mildy so. There's a nice tart fruitiness. The finish has a hint of cocoa. Mild overall, but tasty. Light-bodied with moderate carbonation.

Nice for a milder sour ale.

944. Wexford Irish Cream Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Greene King / Morland Brewery
Alcohol: 5.00%
Serving: Can
Style: Cream Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 3.5 | Taste: 3.0 | Mouthfeel: 3.5 | Drinkability: 3.5

Overall: 3.4

Pours a slightly hazed copper color. The thick, fluffy head retains as a half-inch layer leaving sheets of lace. Malty aroma caramel, toffee and golden raisins.

There's a sweet, malty backbone: caramel and toffee with a mild bitterness in the finish. There are some decent flavors, but it comes off a bit bland overall. Smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation and a sticky, sugary finish.

Flavorful in certain aspects, but a but bland overall.

891-895: The Return of the Belgian Beer Fest: Part 3

This is the third and final post containing the last five beers that I had at the beer fest. Not much else to say, other than to say it was a great fest.

894. Smuttynose Abbey Single

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Smuttynose Brewing Company
Alcohol: 5.80%

Pours a hazed golden. Citric aroma, hoppy? Light but flavorful. This is the extent of my notes, I was probably in a rush to try to get a last sample of La Folie.

881-890. The Return of the Belgian Beer Fest: Part 2

These are the second set of 10 new beers that I had at the Belgian Beer Fest. A good portion of them seem to be rare or one-off beers given that they're not in the BA database. I think this is a sign of a good beer fest, that brewers are willing to bring their small batch, one-off beers to a fest, or better yet, to brew them for a fest. It helps keep the variety high and the offerings interesting.

881. The Tap Honing Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: The Tap / Haverhill Brewery, Inc
Alcohol: 6.80%
Style: Belgian Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a cloudy, straw golden. Topped by a sudsy head. Honey is definitely present in the aroma with a bit of a resiny character. The sweetness of the honey mingles well with a nice tart fruitiness from the yeast. I thought this was an excellent honey ale, and was one of my favorite beers from the fest.

882. L'esprit de l'escalier

Beer Stats:
Brewery: The Tap / Haverhill Brewery, Inc
Alcohol: 6.80%
Style: Saison, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a hazy golden-copper, and is topped by a thin white head. Grassy, grainy, light fruit and citrus in the aroma. Toasty malts upfront with some honey-like sweetness. The finish has a peppery spice, and a light bitterness in the aftertaste.

883. Samuel Adams Blonde Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Boston Beer Company
Alcohol: 10.20%
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a lightly hazed, golden. Topped by an off-white head. The aroma and taste are both peppery with notes of apple fruitiness.

884. Samuel Adams Knee Deep Kriek

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Boston Beer Company
Alcohol: 6.50%
Style: Fruit Lambic, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a hazed reddish-copper with a pinkish head. Cherries in the aroma. Light cherry flavors upfront move into a tart finish. Not a lot of depth.

885. Dernière Volonté

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brasserie Dieu Du Ciel
Alcohol: 6.50%
Style: Belgian Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a cloudy, straw golden, topped by a thin white head. Bready, with notes of caramel and honey in the aroma, and perhaps a hint of medicinal phenols. Light sweetness upfront moves into a medicinal character. Very tasty.

886. Stone Cali-Belgique

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.
Alcohol: 6.90%
Style: Belgian IPA

Pours a lightly-hazed golden. Topped by a thin, white head. Strong aroma of a Belgian ale, banana and other fruitiness. There's also a good bit of hops in the aroma. There is a sweet Belgian fruitiness upfront for a fleeting moment, before it's crushed by a wall of hops. Hoppy, definitely my preference for a Belgian IPA, but lacks balance.

887. Orphan Annie

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Port Brewing Company/The Lost Abbey
Alcohol: 8.00%
Style: American Wild Ale

Pours a hazed, reddish brown. The head is a wispy beige ring. The aroma is woody with cherry fruitiness. Lightly sweet cherry flavors upfront move into an awesome cherry tartness. Dry finish. This was another favorite from the fest.

888. Avril

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brasserie Dupont
Alcohol: 3.50%
Style: Belgian Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

I'm calling this one a Belgian Pale Ale rather than a Saison, which is what BA has it listed as. I think a BPA is closer in style.

Pours a lightly cloudy, straw golden. Topped by a thin, white head. The aroma is surprisingly strong for a table beer, nice grassy and grainy malts and a bit of banana fruitiness. Lightly grainy malt upfront with light fruit and light peppery spice. Pretty mild.

889. Unibroue 17

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Unibroue
Alcohol: 10.00%
Style: Belgian Strong Dark Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Pours a cloudy brown. Toppe by a thick, light brown head. The aroma seemed a bit hoppy and chocolatey. Lightly bready malts upfront, roasty with notes of chocolate and a peppery finish.

890. Les Deux Brasseurs

Beer Stats:
Brewery: De Proefbrouwerij
Alcohol: 8.50%
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

This beer is a collaboration between De Proef and Allagash.

Pours a cloudy, straw golden. The aroma seems to be characteristic Brettanomyces, with some acidic hints. Lightly sour upfront moving through to a medicinal, funky finish with a light bitterness.

867. Quatre-Centième

867. Quatre-Centième

I bought this at Downtown Wine & Spirits in early September. Jadyn and I shared it on the 8th of September.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Unibroue
Alcohol: 7.50%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.5 | Smell: 4.0 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.0

Overall:
4.1

Pours a cloudy, golden color. It's topped by a fluffy, white, three-finger head that fades to a persistent half-inch layer. Patchy lace clings to the side of the glass. The aroma is predominantly fruity, with notes of banana. There are also notes of bready malts, pepper, yeast, and alcohol on the swirl.

Sweet and malty upfront, bready and toasty. These malts give way to a grainy maltiness that remains as the backbone. Banana becomes evident in the center with a bit of clove spiciness. The finish is spicy, predominantly peppery and alcohol taht seems to get warmer the more you drink. There's a yeasty and lightly bitter aftertaste. Medium-bodied with a nice carbonation that isn't too strong.

I've been a nit disappointed by some of Unibroue's more recent releases, but this one is a solid Belgian Strong Pale Ale.

847-849. New York: The Belgian Room

After leaving Burp Castle, we went to The Belgian Room for more beer. I had my first real lambic here, a Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek, back in 2006. So I was looking forward to another trip.

847. Lectio Divina

We started by sharing a 750 mL (I believe) of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale from a brewery in Florida that I'd never heard of.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Saint Somewhere Brewing Company
Alcohol: 8.00%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 3.5 | Smell: 4.0 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 3.5

Overall: 3.85

Pours a cloudy amber. Topped by a thick, beige head that fades to a patchy ring. The aroma is fruity wit notes of grape, citrus and berry. There's also a light peppery note.

Toasty upfront, builds to a sweet, berry fruitiness. The finish is a light peppery spice. Highly carbonated, medium-bodied, dry.

Tasty, not terribly complex, but I'd definitely try more beer from this brewery.

848. Strubbe Super Pils

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brouwerij Strubbe
Alcohol: 5.00%
Serving: Tap
Style: German Pilsener, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 3.5 | Taste: 3.5 | Mouthfeel: 2.0 | Drinkability: 3.0

Overall: 3.4

Pours a clear golden. Topped by a thick, white head that fades to a film, leaving nice lace. The aroma is crisp and grainy with notes of citrus and pepper.

Sweet upfront with a light, fruity citrus quality. Moves through to a finish with banana and citrus. A very faint bitterness in the finish. Medium-bodied with ridiculously low carbonation. I think upping the carbonation would really help this one a lot.

849. Saison Deluxe

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Southampton Publick House
Alcohol: 7.40%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Saison, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 5.0 | Smell: 3.5 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 3.5

Overall: 4.05

Pours a cloudy, orange-golden. Topped by a thick, egg-white head that fades to a film leaving thick layers of lace. The aroma is predominantly bananas, yeast and pepper.

Fruity upfront: bananas and citrus. The finish is peppery with a light bitterness. There's a nice balance between sweet and spicy. High carbonation, medium-bodied.

760. Atomium Grand Cru

I had this beer on tap at the Publick House on February 13th. I don't remember much else about that trip to The Publick House though.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brouwerij Van Steenberge N.V.
Alcohol: 8.00%
Serving: Tap
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 4.5 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.0

Overall: 4.1

I don't remember what type of glass this was served in, probably a tulip glass or a snifter style glass. It poured a golden-copper with a thin, white, filmy head. Sheets of lace clung to the side of the glass. There's a malty, honey sweetness in the aroma, a bit of sharp fruitiness, and a hint of spiciness. There's a clean, malty, fruity sweetness upfront, a light, medicinal quality through the center, and subtly spicy and bitter finish. Medium-bodied, but the high carbonation leaves you with a light sensation on the tongue. The spicy and medicinal flavors do a lot to balance the sweetness and add a bit of character.

The Return of The Belgian Beer Fest

I apologize for the tardiness of this post. Over a month and a half late, I'm beginning to feel like Ward.

Jadyn and I went to the afternoon session of Beer Advocate's Belgian Beer Fest on the 27th of October. We arrived early enough to be within a half-block of the doors. This year's fest seemed less crowded than last year's. The middle row of booths was removed and replaced with seating. Overall I think this was an improvement, there's still more than enough variety and it's far less crowded.

As with other fests the notes are more general, abbreviated and are probably to be trusted less as the fest progresses.

715. Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence Stout

. Cantillon Lambic Aged in Cognac Casks

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brasserie Cantillon
Year: March 2005
Alcohol: 5.00%

A rare Cantillon, I had to try it. Looks much like the Gueuze, hazy straw colored with a faint head. The aroma is smooth, with the cognac making the funkiness less powerful. The beer is still sour, but is smoothed out nicely by the cognac flavors. This was tasty, but I still prefer the bright sourness and earthy funkiness of the original.

706-707. The Publick House

Last Thursday Jadyn and I went to The Publick House for dinner and drinks with Jasper, one of her labmates. We had the Belgian Frites to start, I had the Corbonade Flamande, Jadyn had the pumpkin ravioli and Jasper had a burger. I started off with an Orval and then decided to have a couple of new beers.

706. La Binchoise Reserve Spéciale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brasserie La Binchoise
Alcohol: 9.00%
Serving: Tap
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

I hadn't seen this one on tap before this visit, and being a Belgian beer it fit my mood. It poured a lightly hazed amber with a thin wispy film for a head. The aroma was fairly mild, some tart fruitiness, and a light medicinal quality that became more evident as the beer warmed. The taste was sweet and fruity with a tart cherry undertone. The finish is medicinal and herbal. Light-bodied with a pleasing crispness that comes from the carbonation and the slightly dry finish. Very drinkable. I've never had anything from this brewery before, but I'll probably pick some more of their stuff up if I see it.

707. Echte Kriekenbier

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brouwerij Verhaeghe
Alcohol: 6.80%
Serving: Bottle, 11.2 oz.
Style: Flanders Red Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Jasper translated the name for me, it means Real Kriekenbier (kriekenbier doesn't really need translation). It pours a clear brown-red. A thick, dense, brown head tops the beer, but thins to a wispy film. The aroma is a buttery diacetyl that dissipates a bit after sitting, revealing a tart and sweet cherry aroma. An earthy aroma also emerges as the beer warms. The initial impression is a prickly carbonation followed by sweet cherry flavor with a light tartness. The finish is a mix of sweet and tart. Light-bodied, high carbonation, lightly dry. A little bit sweet for my tastes.

670-671. A Night Out/In

I believe that this post covers Thursday the 10th of May. After I finished teaching my recitation sections Jadyn and I met up and went to The Burren in Davis Square for 2 or 3 beers. After the Burren we stopped by my place because she wanted to have one of the beers in my stash. I decided on a bottle of 16 because I know she likes the style.

We left my house and walked to Jadyn's. Being a warm night, it was more pleasant outside than in. We split a bottle of Mojo IPA and drank it outside while laying down on the trampoline in their backyard. I was fairly intoxicated at this point so I don't remember much other than this tasted like an IPA.

657. Dinner and Drinks at The Publick House

Last Friday night (April 20th) Jadyn and I went to the Publick House for dinner and drinks. The wait was estimated to be an hour when we got there, but we were seated before we'd finished our first beers, an Aprihop for her and a Foret for myself.

We started with an order of Publick House fries as an appetizer. For dinner Jadyn had the Mac and Cheese and I had the Arrogant Bastard meatloaf. The food was good as usual, especially the mashed potatoes that came with my meatloaf. She had a St. Bernardus ABT 12 with dinner and I had an Old Rasputin Imperial Stout. The stout went well with the somewhat bitter Arrogant Bastard based sauce on the meatloaf.

After dinner we had a couple more drinks. I thought that fruit lambics would make a nice after dinner drink. I was hoping for a Cantillon, but they were all out. I ended up having the Boon Oude Geuze Mariage Parfait and Jadyn had a Lindeman's Framboise. Our last drinks were a La Fin Du Monde for Jadyn and a Brooklyn Antwerpen Ale, which I found to be a nice, highly drinkable Belgian Pale Ale.

I enjoyed all of the beers that I ordered, especially Old Rasputin and the Gueuze, and Jadyn particularly enjoyed the Aprihop and Framboise.

657. Brooklyn Antwerpen Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brooklyn Brewery
Alcohol: 5.50%

Appearance (4.0): Pours a clear, copper color with a dense off white head that thins to a film, before disappearing.

Smell (4.0): Very fruity. There are notes of bananas and berries with toasty malts, light hops and a hint of spiciness.

Taste (3.5): Toasty malts upfront move into a sweet fruity center with notes of bananas and apples. The finish has a light residual sweetness with a mild bitterness.

Mouthfeel (3.5): Light-bodied, moderate carbonation.

Drinkability (5.0): Mild but flavorful. Definitely something I could have a few of.

Overall (3.85): I thought this was a spot on attempt at a Belgian Pale Ale. I'd definitely have it again.

654. Allagash Interlude 2006

654. Allagash Interlude 2006

I purchased a bottle of 2006 Interlude at Downtown Wine & Spirits several months ago. It's been sitting in my fridge ever since. I finally got around to opening it tonight. It comes in a corked and caged 750 mL bottle with a simple beige label. There's a tag attached to the cork that says "bop belgian" on the front; the inside says:
Interlude - somewhere between the leap and the landing. It's a jazz solo, the riffing, the unexpected improvisation. Rooted in a Belgian theme, Interlude soars from a second fermentation with our own wild Brettanomyces yeast. Then takes five in French oak wine barrels that once cellared fine Merlots and Sirahs. And then a bottle conditioning. In all, an outrageous effort to make a bottle of beer. But then, if you prefer to swing with magnificent red wine notes and funky farmhouse flavors dancing in the undercurrents of a crisp, remarkable brew, then Interlude has that thing. C'est le goût, toujours!. It's the taste that is always an adventure.
I let this warm to the 40s and served it in one of my Duvel tulip glasses.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Allagash Brewing Company
Year: 2006
Alcohol: 9.50%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide, American Wild Ale

Appearance (5.0): Pours a clear copper with a thick, creamy, off-white head that's fed by a massive quantity of bubbles. Retention is excellent, the head slowly fades to a persistent quarter-inch layer leaving lace that clings to the glass in thick patches. I can't think of a single thing wrong with the way this beer looks.

Smell (4.5): Initially the aromas are a mingling of fruit and Brettanomyces. I predominantly detect aromas of lemon and sour apple. There's also a nice earthy, grassy aroma. Swirling brings the earthiness to the fore along with, maybe, a hint of woodiness. I really love the Brett aromas in this one.

Taste (4.5): Lightly sweet upfront, before moving into a fruity, lemony sourness, which maintains its presence through to the finish. The center is dominated by sourness with some vinous characters making an appearance as well. The finish is funky and earthy with a nice grassy quality from the hops. The sourness and hops create a finish that is sour and mildly bitter. Both bitterness and sourness last well into the aftertaste where they're met by a spicy warming sensation. Pouring the yeast into the glass makes the finish a bit funkier.

Mouthfeel (3.5): Light-to-medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation, with a nice mildly dry finish. Honestly it feels a bit thin to me, perhaps a little more carbonation would help. Decanting the yeast helps.

Drinkability (4.0): Very flavorful with nice sour and funky flavors that aren't overpowering. The alcohol is very well hidden.

Overall (4.45): This seems like a stronger, fruitier and more sour Orval. I really, really like beers that use Brettanomyces, so take the ratings with a grain of salt. I wish I would have purchased another bottle to cellar.

Beer Stats:
Brewery: De Proefbrouwerij
Alcohol: 9.00%
Serving: Bottle, 750 mL
Style: Belgian Strong Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide

Appearance (5.0): The cork hit the ceiling when I opened the bottle. Since the yeast is a compact layer on the bottom of the bottle this pours a brilliant, clear golden. The thick, white head fades slowly leaving patches of thick lace.

Smell (4.5): Medicinal phenols, Brett aromas, as well as some nice fruitiness, especially sour apples.

Taste (4.5): Fruitiness upfront including bananas, sour apples, which are present through the center before they meet a peppery and alcoholic spice. The finish is very strong on the Brett. There's some phenolic character as well as a nice persistent bitterness.

Mouthfeel (4.5): Light-bodied, high carbonation with some warming alcohol and a dry finish.

Drinkability (5.0): Crisp and very flavorful.

Overall (4.65): Very interesting. Fruity with a good dose of Brett.

After the first round we each had an Orval. My bottle was from September 2006 and David's was from July 2006. The Brettanomyces aroma and flavors were much more evident in David's bottle. Just two months had made a huge difference in flavor and aroma.

We still needed to pack, so we left Delirium Café and started the walk back to our hostel. Across the alleyway from the bar is the Janneken Pis, the female counterpart of the Manneken Pis.

Janneken Pis

I still needed to buy chocolate for the lab so decided to stop at a chocolate shop on the way back to the hostel. The Manneken Pis themed chocolatier was eliminated because of sheer kitsch, as evidenced by the photo below. We ended up stopping at Corne Port Royal where I dropped 25 € on a box of chocolates, 2 milk chocolate bars and two 77% cocoa bars. The lab was very pleased.

Kitsch

We got back to the hostel and packed. We had two six-packs of Westvleteren to pack as well as a 750 mL bottle of Cantillon St. Lamvinus, an 11.2 oz bottle of Duvel Gefilterd and an 11.2 oz bottle of Verboden Vrucht. The Westvleteren and the Cantillon were highest priority. We put David's clothes in my bag, and put the beer in David's small duffle. We wrapped each bottle of Westvleteren in socks and then newspaper and placed them back in the six-pack holders. We wrapped the Cantillon in a shirt. We padded the bag heavily with paper and then put the beers in. We left the Verboden Vrucht and decided to drink the Duvel Gefilterd.

Day Seven, Kortrijk: Boulevard

We returned to the hotel in Kortrijk and headed to a bar called Boulevard. The inside reminded me of a house, there was a distinct front room filled with tables. The waitress, who wore a bright red hat, took us through the menu and was very friendly. I was impressed at how easily she moved through the packed bar carrying a tray. It was crowded so we ended up having the first round standing. The waitress eventually found us a spot at a large table where a young couple was sitting. We talked with them until they had to leave. I don't remember the context, but the guy said, "The Germans also made mistakes."

David's careful examination of a bottle of Cantillon caught the eye of the couple at the next table, they were probably late 50s or early 60s. They invited us over and bought us a round, we chose Rodenbach. We talked for a while, but language was a little bit more of an issue. Somehow the topic turned to WWI or WWII and the guy said "Without the Americans we would all be Germans." The quote isn't exact because his construction of the statement wasn't exact.

We also had a great plate of snacks that included cheese, sausage with mustard, cornichons, yellow cocktail onions and pine nuts. In addition to the new beers listed below, we had a bottle of Cantillon Broucsella Grand Cru, which was brought out in a champagne bucket, and the Rodenbachs that were purchased for us.

We had breakfast at the hostel in Brugge and then caught the train to Kortrijk. We walked around the city and saw what there was to see, which was essentially just the Stadhuis. We stopped for lunch at a restaurant called "Pomodoro, Pomodoro," where David had an alleged slice of pizza and I had salmon ravioli.

Having exhausted the tourism opportunities in Kortrijk, we decided to take to train to Ieper, rent a car and drive to some of the WWI grave sites in the surrounding countryside. The rental place was a Ford dealership on the edge of town. We were able to rent a Ford KA without any problems, though the guy thought it was weird that we just wanted it for one day. We stopped for gas (petrol!) and purchased a road atlas of Belgium. The picture below isn't the car we drove, but it gives you an idea of how small the car was.

The tiny Ford KA

We drove to various WWI cemeteries around Ieper including the German Cemetery.

After driving to the cemeteries, which where wholly depressing, we decided to drive to Abdij St. Sixtus to see if In De Vrede, the brewery café, was open. We tried to take N8 to Westvleteren, but due to abysmal signage, we were unable to follow the road. We ended up getting lost and taking a circuitous route. Finding the abbey on the back roads was difficult as well. We eventually found it, but the café is closed on Fridays so we weren't able to get anything.

We then drove into Poperinge for dinner. The plan was to eat at Paix, which was listed in the Good Beer Guide, but the food was a little too haught. Instead we stopped at a Belgian fast food palce. I ordered a burger and fries (with mayo) and a can of Hoegaarden, and David ordered a chicken kabob with fries (with ketchup). The burger was okay, but the fries were good. As we were leaving the fast food place we saw the guy we rented the car from in line, though he didn't notice us.

We then went to Paix for a round before heading to Ieper.
