Matt had been pushing the idea of a six=pack swap for awhile, so not long after Jadyn and I returned from Spain we gave it a go. Of the six beers I had, the two that Jadyn and I brought were new to me.
1182. Honker's Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Goose Island
Alcohol: 4.20%
Serving: Bottle 12 oz.
Style: English Bitter, BJCP Style Guide
Appearance: 3.5| Smell: 3.5 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 3.5 | Drinkability: 4.0
Overall:3.75
Honker's Ale pours a hazy copper color, and is topped by an off-white head that fades to a sudsy film. The aroma is toasty and bready with notes of caramel, and mild, piney hops.
This beer is toasty and bready upfront with a lightly sweet caramel that builds towards the center. The malts continue on to the finish where they're met by mildly bitter, piney hops. This bitter is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation, and a mild husky quality.
True to what an English Bitter should be, this beer is balanced and would make a great session beer.
1183. Goose Island India Pale Ale

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Goose Island
Alcohol: 5.90%
Serving: Bottle, 12 oz.
Style: English India Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide
Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 4.0 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 3.0 | Drinkability: 4.0
Overall: 3.9
Goose Island IPA pours a clear, golden-copper color, and is topped by a light, fluffy, off-white head that fades slowly, leaving good lace. The aroma is nice and hoppy. There are notes of pine, resiny hops, and a light, sugary maltiness.
Toasty malts upfront build into a raw sugary sweetness towards the finish. The finish itself has a piney, resiny hop bitterness. This IPA is light-bodied, and moderatley carbonated, though it could be a bit bulkier.
As and English IPA it does the trick, though I tend to prefer the hoppier American varieties, but I can't criticize them for doing what they set out to do.

Jadyn and I had some friends over to our apartment on Saturday June 13th. I picked up a mixed twelve-pack of Long Trail beers, two of which I hadn't had before. I had both that evening, but have reviewed each subsequently.
1027. Long Trail Belgian White

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Long Trail Brewing Company
Alcohol: 4.70%
Serving: Bottle, 12 oz.
Style: Witbier, BJCP Style Guide
Appearance: 3.5 | Smell: 3.5 | Taste: 3.5 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.0
Overall: 3.6
Long Trail's Belgian White pours a cloudy, straw color, and is topped by a bright white head that quickly fades to a film. I like the color a lot, but the head retention leaves something to be desired. The aroma is fairly mild overall, though the traditional notes of spicy coriander and citrus are there, along with notes of pepper, yeast and banana. There's also a bit of graininess present in the aroma, which, when combined with the relative lightness of the other components of the aroma hints at an inviting crispness.
Like a lot of wheat beers the malts here are predominantly grainy with a mild sweetness, but their major contribution is a crisp texture on the palate rather than a huge amount of flavor. Esters contributed by the yeast, and the traditional Wit spicing become evident in the center. There are bright citric notes of lemon and orange, notes of banana, a coriander spiciness, and a peppery finish that melds with the crisp backbone of the beer in the finish. Long Trail's Belgian White is light-bodied with a nice crispness that comes from the grainy malt backbone and the substantial carbonation. There's also a mild dryness in the finish.
Long Trail Belgian White is a decent Witbier. It's a nice refreshing summer beer, but it could use a bit more punch in the flavors from spicing.
1028. Long Trail Traditional IPA

Beer Stats:
Brewery: Long Trail Brewing Company
Alcohol: 5.90%
Serving: Bottle, 12 oz.
Style: English India Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide
Appearance: 4.0 | Smell: 3.0 | Taste: 4.0 | Mouthfeel: 4.0 | Drinkability: 4.0
Overall: 3.8
Long Trail IPA pours a lightly hazed golden color with a hint of copper, making it a shade lighter than most other IPAs. I really like the color on this beer a lot. It's topped by a thin, sudsy white head with good, clinging lace. The aroma is fairly mild overall. There are notes of toasty and biscuity malts as well as leafy, resiny hops.
This IPA is very malt-forward, with a strong malt backbone. Initially there's a bready, caramel sweetness upfront and through the center. The finish has a nice peppery spice that plays well with the resiny hop bittereness. It's not the hoppiest IPA, but if you want a maltier beer that still has a good amount of hop flavor this IPA nails it. Long Trail's IPA is medium-bodied with prickly carbonation and a grassy dryness in the finish.
Long Trail IPA might not be the hoppiest IPA, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. This beer is the epitome of balance, with enough malts to offset, but not overpower the hop bitterness and flavors.

I went to NYC to visit David last weekend. Friday night we saw the Mets play the Diamondbacks at Shea, and then went to Spuyten Duyvil afterwards for a couple rounds. Saturday we drove out to Megan's family's place on Shelter Island and then biked out 10 miles on the North Fork and hit up the tasting rooms of several wineries.
The beer at the baseball game was overpriced and of poor quality, but that didn't stop us from drinking. We had three beers each. The one new beer that I had was the abysmal Budweiser Select.
674. Budweiser Select
Beer Stats:
Brewery: Anheuser-Busch, Inc.
Alcohol: 4.30%
Serving: Aluminum Bottle, 12 oz.
Style: Light Lager, BJCP Style Guide
I consumed this beer right out of the can. This is a pretty standard light lager. The aroma is fairly light, mostly cooked grain. The taste is lightly malty and sweet. There's an unpleasant graininess as the beer warms. Dry huskiness and watery in the mouthfeel. Not pleasant to drink.
After the game we went to Spuyten Duyvil in Brooklyn, an excellent beer bar. I liked the bar a lot. The ceiling was pressed tin and the walls were decorated with educational charts circa 1950s. There were seats in the windows and a couch against one wall. The walls in the restrooms were covered with chalkboards and there was a bucket of chalk provided. The bar seemed popular with the Hipster crowd. The selection was really good. There were 6 beers on tap, none of which I'd had, and an impressive bottle list, including a Rare/Odd category. The food was reminiscent of the bar food we had at Boulevard in Belgium. There was a list of meats, cheeses and other items. We had a plate that included sweet dry sausage, Stilton, olives and bread. I firmly believe that all bars should offer this type of food. We had two rounds, but switched off halfway in each for a total of four new beers.

643. Brooklyn East India Pale Ale

I picked up a six-pack of Brooklyn's East India Pale Ale a few days ago at Downtown Wine & Spirits to have something to drink on nights that I don't feel like reviewing. I let this warm a bit and served it in my NERAX pint glass.
Beer Stats:
Brewery: Brooklyn Brewery
Alcohol: 7.00%
Serving: Bottle, 12 oz.
Style: English India Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide
Appearance (4.0): Pours a lightly hazy copper with a thick, fluffy, beige head that fades to a sudsy layer leaving patchy lace.
Smell (4.0): Predominantly grassy, leafy, herbal and resiny hops. There are light pepper and even lighter citrus notes. Toasty and malty aromas come out upon swirling.
Taste (3.5): Upfront there's a toasty maltiness the becomes sweeter as it moves to the center, where peppery and citrus flavors appear. The finish has a mildly bitter, but flavorful resiny hop character, which is nice, but could have been stronger.
Mouthfeel (3.0): Moderate carbonation, medium-bodied, but it somehow still manages to feel a little thin.
Drinkability (3.5): Easy to drink, definitely something you could make a session of.

431. Hitachino Nest Japanese Classic Ale

I purchased this last night at Downtown Wine & Spirits. They had been out of it for several months, so when I noticed that they had some in stock I grabbed a bottle. This beer was warmed to around 40ยบ F and served in my NERAX pint glass.
The bottle's description is:
Brewery: Kiuchi Brewery
Alcohol: 7.00%
Serving: Bottle, 11.2 oz.
Style: English India Pale Ale, BJCP Style Guide
Appearance (4.5): Pours a cloudy amber with a thin, creamy, beige head that is fed by vigorous carbonation. Retention is excellent, the head absolutely does not shrink. Lacing is nice.
Smell (4.0): Fruity and bready malts, yeast, and a resiny hop aroma that becomes more prominent as the beer warms. The aroma is very English. There may be hints of cedar, but these are fleeting.
Taste (4.0): Lightly fruity with toasty malts, followed by a resiny and piney hop bitterness with a citric twang. The aftertaste is a lingering woodiness.
Mouthfeel (4.0): Very tingly carbonation, but smooth once the carbonation dies down. Medium-bodied with a dry finish.
Drinkability (4.5): Very easy to drink, with a nice hop bittereness.
Overall (4.15): A good interpretation of the English IPA style with an interesting woodiness.

380. Ridgeway IPA

I got these a few nights ago at Downtown Wine & Spirits. I let this warm slightly and served it in my NERAX pint glass. Ridgeway IPA is an English IPA. BJCP Style Guide.
Appearance (4.0): Pours a copper color with good clarity. A half-inch white head tops the beer briefly before it thins to a patchy layer and then disappears completely.
Smell (3.5): Nice malt aroma, with sweet fruits and a light resiny hop aroma. I expected more hops.
Taste (3.0): Sweet fruitiness greets the palate upfront, followed by a toasty maltiness, and a moderate hop bitterness in the finish. I think this beer is really lacking in hop character to balance the sweetness.
Mouthfeel (3.5): Moderate carbonation, light-bodied and slightly thin.
Drinkability (4.0): Easy drinking with pleasant flavors.
Overall (3.45): There are some nice flavors in this beer, but in the end it's too sweet for an IPA.
